Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • The VMware VirtualCenter Server service fails to start after rebooting the server

Cause

This is a known issue affecting VMware vCenter Server 5.1.x.
This issue occurs because the vpxd service starts before the SSO service.

Resolution

This issue is resolved in vCenter Server 5.1 Update 1. To download vCenter Server 5.1 Update 1, see the VMware Download Center.
For more information, see the vCenter Server 5.1 Update 1 Release Notes.
To work around this issue when you do not want to upgrade:
  1. Restart the vCenter Server SSO service. For more information, see Stopping, starting, or restarting VMware vCenter Server services (1003895).
  2. Start the VMware VirtualCenter Server service. For more information, see Stopping, starting, or restarting VMware vCenter Server services (1003895).
Alternatively, you can set a dependency on the vpxd service to not start until SSO has been started, or setup a delayed start.
For more information on the dependency of services, see http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc990290(v=ws.10).aspx.
