Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • Attempting to upgrade vCenter Server Appliance or Platform Services Controller Appliance through the Virtual Appliance Management Interface (VAMI) fails
  • The VAMI update status is stuck at 70%, at the step [Started] Update Packages
  • After refreshing the VAMI, the Update Version and Release Date is updated without confirmation

Cause

This issue occurs when the lighthttpd service is restarted in order to be updated. This restart causes the VAMI update monitoring to become disconnected, resulting in the hang at 70%.

Resolution

This issue is resolved in vCenter Server 6.0 Update 2, available at VMware Downloads. For more information, see the vCenter Server 6.0 Update 2 Release Notes.

Note: You must apply this to both the Platform Services Controller Appliance and vCenter Server Appliance. Restart the appliance after applying.

To track the progress of the update, log into the vCenter Server or Platform Services Controller Appliance and check the update status in the /var/log/vmware/applmgmt/software-packages.log file.

To check the update status:
  1. Connect to the External Platform Service Controller Appliance with an SSH session.
  2. Provide the root user user name and password when prompted.
  3. Using the Appliance Shell showlog plug-in, open the software-packages.log file using the following command:

    showlog vmware/applmgmt/software-packages.log

  4. After a successful update, you see a message in the log file similar to:

YYYY-DD-MMT [23221]DEBUG:task_manager:UpdateTask: status=completed, percent=100, message=Packages upgraded successfully, reboot is required to complete installation

After the upgrade is completed, press the Q key to leave the session.

  5. After confirming that the update was successful, restart the vCenter Server or Platform Services Controller appliance.
