Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • Windows 7 virtual machine restarts unexpectedly when running on ESXi 6.0 hosts.
  • In the /var/log/vmkwarning.log, you see entries similar to:

Cause

The issue occurs when the virtual machine uses a high video resolution setting or uses multiple displays.

Resolution

This issue is resolved in ESXi 6.0 Update 1, available at VMware Downloads. For more information, see the ESXI 6.0 Update 1 Release Notes.

Note: If the affected ESXi 6.0 hosts are part of a VMware Horizon View cluster, ESXi 6.0 Update 1 is compatible with VMware Horizon View 6.2 and above.

To work around this issue, change the sched.mem.pshare.enable to false in the virtual machines .vmx file:
  1. Shutdown the affected virtual machine.
  2. Connect to the ESXi host running the virtual machine with SSH using root credentials. For more information, see Using ESXi Shell in ESXi 5.x and 6.0 (2004746).
  3. Navigate to the virtual machine folder by running this command:

    cd /vmfs/volumes/vm_datastore/virtual_machine/

  4. Open the virtual machines .vmx file using text editor:

    vi virtual_machine.vmx

  5. Edit the entry sched.mem.pshare.enable to be false:

    For example:

    sched.mem.pshare.enable = "FALSE"

  6. Save the changes and exit the editor.
  7. Power on the virtual machine.
