Alias value is empty when attempting to log in to VMware vCenter Server 5.5

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

• Cannot log in to VMware vSphere Client.
• Attempting to log in to the VMware vSphere Client fails.
• You see the error:
  
  A general system error occurred: alias value should not be empty
  
  
• You are able to sign into the vSphere Web Client, but attempting to access the Single Sign-On (SSO) Identity Source configuration fails.
• You see the error:
  
  alias value should not be empty
  
  
• In the vpxd.log file, located at C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware VirtualCenter\Logs\, you see entries similar to:
  
  YYYY-MM-DD TIME [04700 info 'Default' opID=1f60d2ee] [VpxLRO] -- ERROR task-internal-129 -- -- vim.SessionManager.loginByToken: vmodl.fault.SystemError:

Cause

This issue occurs when the Active Directory Identity Sources are not available.

This issue may also occur while SSO is starting up, or for a period of time after start-up. This occurs when the number of domains in the Active Directory forest is large.

Resolution

This is a known issue affecting:

• VMware vCenter Server 5.5.0b (Build 1476327)
• VMware vCenter Server 5.5.0 Update 1 (Build 1623101)
• VMware vCenter Server Appliance 5.5.0b (Build 1476327)
• VMware vCenter Server Appliance 5.5.0 Update 1 (Build 1623101)
