Issue/Introduction

 

  • VM is not able to ping outside of ESXi Host
  • ping/vmkpings are failing with "Host is down" message
  • Messages in /var/log/vobd.log indicate a physical Network Layer issue:

 

  • Open SSH session to affected ESXi host. Type "esxtop" --> click on "n" (for getting the Network displayed) --> You observe that one or more TEAM-PNIC entries showing "void"



Cause

Physical Network Layer issue: No active uplinks in NIC teaming configuration of the port group.

Potential caused by one or more of the following: 

  • Port Flapping (Check /var/log/vobd.log for 
  • Issues on the physical Switch, e.g. LACP/LAG

Resolution

  • Check port group configuration and make sure that there are available uplinks in active state.
  • Physical network issue should be investigated by the network team who manages the physical switch connected to ESXi host.
