VMware vSphere ESXi

This article describes the necessary steps to configure the VDP appliance when vCenter uses custom HTTP and/or HTTPS ports for the Web service.

  • When configuring VDP, performing Test Connection for the vCenter Registration fails with the error:

Unable to verify vCenter listening on specified HTTP Port. Please re-check values and try again.

  • vCenter HTTP port and/or HTTPS port are customized. Default ports are 80 for HTTP and 443 for HTTPS.

This issue occurs because VDP appliance firewall blocks outbound traffic other than the default ports.

To resolve this issue, configure the VDP appliance firewall and allow outbound traffic on custom ports to communicate with vCenter.
  1. Log in to the Web Client and note the custom port(s).

Note: To note the custom ports, go to the vCenter Server instance > Manage tab > General > Ports.
  2. Open a Console to the VDP appliance and log in as root.

Note: SSH access should be disabled before VDP is configured.
  3. Change the directory to:

    cd /etc/
  4. Run this command to backup the firewall.base file:

    cp firewall.base firewall.base.bak
  5. Edit the file and add the custom ports.

For example, (HTTP custom port 81 and HTTPS custom port 444):

    vi firewall.base

    exec_rule -A OUTPUT -p tcp -m multiport --dport 53,80,81,443,444,123,5555 -j ACCEPT

Press Esc and then run the wq! command to save and quit.
  6. Run these commands to restart the firewall service:

    service avfirewall stop
    service avfirewall start

  7. Go back to the vdp-configure page and click Test Connection to verify.
