vSAN Storage/VASA Provider Restart Process When Errors on Refresh and Duplicate Entries

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

Entering the Storage Providers tab in vCenter, refreshing providers in the tab, and/or removing an entry results in the following error; or there are duplicate VASA provider entries that give the error when removing:
(vmodl.fault.ManagedObjectNotFound) {
faultCause = null,
faultMessage = null,
obj = ManagedObjectReference: type = VasaProvider, value = vasaProvider-2, serverGuid = null
}
 

 

 



Environment

VMware vSAN 6.6.x
VMware vSAN 6.1.x
VMware vSAN 6.2.x
VMware vSAN 6.0.x
VMware vSAN 6.5.x

Resolution

For VCSA based vCenter:

  1. SSH to the VCSA and login as root
  2. Enter the command: "/etc/init.d/vmware-sps restart", or "service-control stop vmware-sps" followed by "service-control start vmware-sps"
  3. In the vCenter web client navigate to the vCenter level and the Storage Providers tab
  4. In the vCenter web client select the actual vSAN storage provider(s) listed in the Storage Providers tab
  5. Choose the button to remove the storage provider(s)
  6. SSH to all hosts in the cluster
  7. On each host enter the command: /etc/init.d/vsanvpd restart
  8. In the vCenter web client choose the button to refresh the storage providers

Note: Steps 6-8 only needs to be performed if dealing with version 6.5

For vCenter Server running on Windows:

  1. From Windows host running vCenter restart the Storage Based Policy Management service using the Windows services
  2. In the vCenter web client navigate to the vCenter level and the Storage Providers tab
  3. In the vCenter web client select the actual vSAN storage provider(s) listed in the Storage Providers tab
  4. Choose the button to remove the storage provider(s)
  5. SSH to all hosts in the cluster
  6. On each host enter the command: /etc/init.d/vsanvpd restart
  7. In the vCenter web client choose the button to refresh the storage providers
Note: Steps 5-7 only needs to be performed if dealing with version 6.5
