This article explains the vSAN HCL Health – Controller is VMware certified for ESXi release check in the vSAN Health Service and provides details on why it might report an error.

Adherence to the VMware Compatibility Guide (VCG)/Hardware Compatibility Guide (HCL) is critically important to the stability of vSAN environments. Experience has shown that failing to observe the VCG often leads to production outages over time. It is, therefore, very important to monitor the health checks in the HCL checker category. Q: What does the vSAN HCL Health - Controller release support health check do?

This check verifies if the vSAN controller is certified by VMware against the current installed ESXi version.

Q: What does it mean when it is in an error state?

The current ESXi release is not certified by VMware or HCL DB is not up-to-date. For the second case, please refer to the health check result of vSAN HCL DB up-to-date.

Notes: If the health check is empty, it may be caused by 'vSAN HCL DB up-to-date' or 'SCSI controller is VMware certified' check not being green. Please address the warning of those two health checks first.

Q: How does one troubleshoot and fix the error state?

If health check shows warning, please make sure the vSAN HCL DB is up-to-date. If warning is persistent, please consider upgrading ESXi to supported release.

If health check result is empty, it may caused by 'vSAN HCL DB up-to-date' or 'SCSI controller is VMware certified' check is not green. Please address the warning of those two health checks first.
