Issue/Introduction

This article explains why and how to shutdown all necessary VMs manually during the vSAN cluster shutdown process in 7.0 U3.

Environment

VMware vSAN 7.0.x

Resolution

Before entering the vSAN cluster shutdown process, a hard requirement is that all VMs need to be powered off.
Agent VMs can be automatically managed while other VMs will be checked by the shutdown pre-check.
Any VMs that are still not powered off and identified during the shutdown pre-check need to be powered off manually.

Custom VMs
All custom VMs need to be powered off manually.

HCI mesh
Once the HCI mesh server cluster is powered off, the mounted datastore in the HCI mesh client cluster will become inaccessible.
All VMs that are stored on the HCI mesh server cluster datastore should be powered off before powering off the HCI mesh server cluster.

WCP enabled environment
For a WCP enabled environment, please refer to the following documentation for more details: https://docs.vmware.com/en/VMware-Cloud-Foundation/4.3/vcf-operations/GUID-38BA4D29-A7B0-4E52-9D83-F65AFD481465.html#GUID-38BA4D29-A7B0-4E52-9D83-F65AFD481465
