Issue/Introduction

This article provides information on the use of AHCI controllers in vSAN nodes.

Environment

VMware vSAN 6.x

Resolution

The use of AHCI controllers to connect vSAN drives is not supported. SAS/SATA SSDs are supported only in the scenario where they are connected to a SAS/SATA HBA or RAID controller. Refer to the vSAN VCG for a list of supported RAID and HBA devices.

AHCI controllers may be used to connect boot drives for a vSAN node, as long as the boot device meets the endurance and performance criteria for ESXi boot. For more information, see M.2 SSD as Boot Device for vSAN.
