Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

Failures to tolerate method is missing from storage policy making it impossible to select erasure coding.

Resolution

  1. Check if the license used by vSAN allows using Erasure Coding: License Requirements
  2. Check if the environment is All-Flash (Click the cluster > Configure > vSAN > Disk Management > You will see on that screen if the environment is hybrid or all-flash)
  3. Check if the disks are on the correct disk format version (Click the cluster > Configure > vSAN > Disk Management > You will see on that screen what version they are on ->On-disk format version 3.0 or later is required to support RAID 5 or RAID 6): Understanding vSAN on-disk format versions and compatibility (2148493)
  4. Make sure the environment has 4 or more servers contributing storage to vSAN: RAID 5 or RAID 6 Design Considerations
  5. If the environment has a large amount of VMs, suggest applying the policy in small groups of VMs to prevent a huge resync.
