VMware vRealize Operations 8.x
VMware vRealize Operations 7.x
VMware vRealize Operations 6.x

Resolution

Process to reset admin password in VMware Aria Operations:

Criteria to Create Password:

  • VMware Aria Operations passwords must contain at least 8 characters, one upper case, one lower case, one numerical digit, and one special character.
  • Special characters include: !@#$%^&*+= ".
  • The password must also be different from the last 5 historical passwords.
  • The password cannot match the username, or contain the "password" keyword
  • The admin user account spans the local OS, as well as the Application.  This could lead to the password being locked on one side, and not the other.  It's important to follow the necessary steps below very carefully to avoid the account getting misaligned on the local OS vs the Application.

Update the admin Password

To update or change the admin password in VMware Aria Operations, follow the steps below.

  1. Log into the VMware Aria Operations admin UI as the local admin user.

Example: https://IP_or_FQDN/admin

Note: Replace IP_or_FQDN with the actual IP or FQDN of the VMware Aria Operations UI.

  1. Click the drop-down on the User icon in the upper right corner and click Change Administrator Password.

  2. Enter the current admin password, then enter and confirm a new password.

  3. Click Save.

Log out and back into the admin UI using the new password to confirm it works.

Reset the admin Password

Note: Before resetting the admin password, ensure that the account is not locked out by following Log in to Admin and Product UI as admin fails in VMware Aria Operations

To reset the admin password, follow the steps below:

  1. Log in to the Master node as root via SSH or Console.
  2. Run the following command and follow the prompts:

$VMWARE_PYTHON_BIN $VCOPS_BASE/../vmware-vcopssuite/utilities/sliceConfiguration/bin/vcopsSetAdminPassword.py --reset

Notes:

  • This will change the password across all nodes in the cluster.
  • If you receive an error similar to Saved existing admin user credentials into backup file Call failed: Code 500 - HTTP Error 500: Internal Server Error Response: {"error_message_key":"general.failure","error_arguments":["1","passwd: Have exhausted maximum number of retries for service\n"]}, then the password entered does not meet the complexity or history requirements.

Additional Information

After changing the admin user password, ensure the password is updated in any existing integrations, such as VMware Aria Operations for Logs (formerly known as vRealize Log Insight) or VMware Aria Suite Lifecycle (formerly known as vRealize Lifecycle Manager).
