Collecting performance data for ESXi hosts using the vSphere Client

This article provides information on collecting performance data for ESXi 5.x/6.x/7.x/8.x


Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 5.x
VMware vSphere ESXi 6.x
VMware vSphere ESXi 7.x
VMware vSphere ESXi 8.x

Resolution

Depending on the vSphere Version you are using there are different options available to collect performance snapshots.

To collect performance snapshots using the vSphere Windows Client (only available up to vSphere 6.0):
  1. Open the vSphere Client to log in either directly to the ESXi 5.x/6.0 host or vCenter Server.
  2. In the Inventory panel, select ESXi host.
  3. Click File > Export > Export System Logs.
  4. In the Export System Logs wizard, select the Gather performance data option. Do not alter other defaults.
  5. Click Next.
  6. Enter a download location where you want to save the diagnostic data.


To collect performance snapshots using the vSphere Flex Client (Flash-based) or the vSphere HTML5 Client in vSphere 6.5/6.7/7.0

  1. Open the vSphere Client to login to vCenter Server
  2. Open the "Hosts and Clusters" View
  3. Search the ESXi in the inventory, for which you want to collect performance snapshots, and right-click on it to open the context menue
  4. In the context menue, click on "Export System Logs..."
  5. In the wizard being shown, enable the option "Gather performance data", but do not alter any of the settings in the list on top of the window
  6. Depending on your requirements, you can either either change the duration and interval values, or you can just keep the default settings
  7. To finish the the export, click on "Export logs"
