Issue/Introduction

Problems have been reported and observed in the following scenarios:
  1. Deploying virtual machines from Templates using VirtualCenter Server fails.
  2. VMotion fails.
  3. Third Party Deployment software fails when using multicast mode to deploy virtual machines. For example, Microsoft ADS (Automated Deployment Service) multicast deployments fail but unicast deployments are successful.
  4. Slow network performance when copying files between Shared VMFS Storage (SAN, NFS, or NAS) and local VMFS storage.

Environment

VMware ESX Server 3.0.x
VMware VirtualCenter 2.0.x

Resolution

In all four instances described in the Details section, the problem can be caused by having a faulty write-back cache battery or not having a write-back cache battery module installed in the OEM system for the local storage.

To resolve the issue:

  1. Ensure all system and storage firmware is updated to the latest recommended by your OEM vendor.
  2. Verify with your hardware vendor that your system has a functioning write-back cache battery module installed. Some hardware tests may be needed to verify this.
