Issues with SFTP VAMI backup on 7.0 u3c and above

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

• Backing up the VCSA with the VAMI using SFTP fails
• In the VAMI.log and backup.log, you will see the following message:

“Failure establishing ssh session: -43, Failed getting banner”

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 7.0.3

Cause

Per our current investigation, we believe that this is due to vCenter security hardening not being able to negotiate with the legacy SFTP servers correctly on outdated and disabled security algorithms.

Resolution

Please work with your SFTP vendor to update your SFTP software accordingly.

Workaround:
Please try a different backup protocol:

vCSA 7.0/8.0: FTP, HTTP, NFS, HTTPS, SMB, FTPS
