Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • The automatic IaaS upgrade process fails while upgrading a DEM or Agent component.
  • In the VAMI Update tab there is an error while executing upgrade-dem or upgrade-agent command.
  • In the /opt/vmware/var/log/vami/upgrade-iaas.log there is an error while executing the upgrade-dem or upgrade-agent command.

Environment

VMware vRealize Automation 7.x

Cause

The automatic upgrade process from 6.2.5 is uninstalling all DEM/Agent services first and reinstalling the new version due to a version upgrade limitation within the MSI files when multiple instances are installed on the same machine.  There may be a loss in service components if an issue occurs while upgrading an DEM/Agent component and the node that has failed has not been reverted before reattempting the upgrade process.

Resolution

VMware is aware of this issue.  See the workaround below for additional information.

Workaround:
For each IaaS DEM / Agent component where the upgrade has failed, reverting to a pre-upgrade snapshot before retrying the upgrade on this component is necessary.
  1. Isolate the original cause of the failure before continuing.
  2. Revert the snapshots on the failed DEM / Agent component node(s).
  3. Start the automatic IaaS upgrade manually by running the upgrade script located in /usr/lib/vcac/tools/upgrade on the primary virtual appliance.
