Unable to create a VM placement policy on Cloud Director

Issue/Introduction

  • During creation of a VM placement policy, the UI fails to display the VM Groups within the datacenter hierarchy display menu.

  • When trying to view the VCD Provider Portal, the UI fails to load with error "class java.lang.NullPointerException"
  • vApps/VMs display a "class java.lang.NullPointerException" error when opening the their properties.

  • Within the log file /opt/vmware/vcloud-director/logs/vcloud-container-debug.log you observe the following errors:

  • Task fail with errors similar to the following:

    The operation failed because no suitable resource was found. Out of 2 candidate hubs: 1 hubs eliminated because: Does not contain required storage container(s): [[moref://########-####-####-####-########/Datastore#datastore-####]] Rejected hubs: resgroup-#### 1 hubs eliminated because: Only contains rejected VM Groups(s): [[VM Group Name]] Rejected hubs: resgroup-####- PlacementException NO_FEASIBLE_PLACEMENT_SOLUTION

Environment

VMware Cloud Director 10.5.1.x

Cause

This issue can occur if a policy in the pvdc_compute_policy table of the database has incomplete information within the policy_detail column.

This has been observed in Cloud Director 10.5.1.x
