"com.vmware.ssdc.library.exceptions.UndeployVMException: Error on power off or suspend" error when powering off a Virtual Machine in Cloud Director

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

• Powering off a virtual machine in Cloud Director fails with an error in the form:

com.vmware.ssdc.library.exceptions.UndeployVMException: Error on power off or suspend

• The /opt/vmware/vcloud-director/logs/vcloud-container-debug.log on the Cloud Director Cells show the following error: 

Caused by: java.util.concurrent.ExecutionException: com.vmware.ssdc.library.exceptions.UndeployVMException: Error on power off or suspend.
  at com.vmware.vcloud.activity.toolkit.AbstractToolkitActivity$BasePhase.finish(AbstractToolkitActivity.java:185)
  at com.vmware.ssdc.backend.UndeployVirtualMachineActivity$UndeployVMComputeFabricPhase.invoke(UndeployVirtualMachineActivity.java:326)

Environment

VMware Cloud Director 10.x

Cause

This issue can occur if there is a mismatch between the Virtual Machine power state in Cloud Director and vCenter.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, a reconnect between Cloud Director and vCenter should be completed to align them.

1. Log into the Cloud Director Provider Portal and navigate to the Resources tab.
2. Click the vCenter Instances tab.
3. Choose the radio button of the vCenter that Cloud Director is connected to where the Virtual Machine in question is located and click Reconnect.
4. Attempt to Power Off the Virtual Machine again.
