"Stop the VM and try again" error when attempting to delete a Virtual Machine in Cloud Director

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

• When attempting to delete a Virtual Machine in Cloud Director an error is returned of the form:

Stop the VM and try again

• The VM cannot be stopped or powered off from the Cloud Director UI.

Environment

VMware Cloud Director 10.x

Cause

This error can occur because the VM is in a powered on state according to the Cloud Director Database.

The option to stop or power off the VM may not be available from Cloud Director due to the VM no longer existing at the vSphere level or being in an invalid state.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, please open a Support Request with VMware Technical Support and reference this KB article 89282.
Database modifications may be required to resolve this issue and will require VMware Technical Support assistance.
