Issue/Introduction

  • When attempting to delete a Virtual Machine in Cloud Director(VCD) an error is returned of the form:
The requested operation could not be executed on VM <vm name>. Stop the VM and try again' when attempting to delete a virtual machine
  • The VM cannot be stopped or powered off from the Cloud Director UI.
  • Unable to delete VM from VCloud.
  • The delete option is currently greyed out.

Environment

VMware Cloud Director 10.x

Cause

This error can occur because the VM is in a powered on state according to the Cloud Director database.

The option to stop or power off the VM may not be available from Cloud Director due to the VM no longer existing at the vSphere level or being in an invalid state.
