Issue/Introduction

  • There is insufficient space on the Embedded PostgreSQL Database disk of a VMware Cloud Director appliance.
  • When running df -h on the primary cell, the database disk mounted on /var/vmware/vpostgres is showing as 100% full.
  • VMware Cloud Director service will not start, and the VMware Cloud Director UI is down.
  • VCD Service fails to start with error: "Conversation opened at: java.lang.Exception".

Environment

VMware Cloud Director 10.x

Cause

The PostgreSQL database resides on Hard disk 3 and has a default size of 80 GB. Depending on environmental factors this may not be sufficient, and the Embedded PostgreSQL Database disk of a VMware Cloud Director appliance may become full.

Resolution

If you have insufficient space on the PostgreSQL database disk of a VMware Cloud Director appliance, you can increase the capacity of the embedded PostgreSQL database.

Details on how to perform this process are outlined in the VMware Cloud Director documentation here, Increase the Capacity of the Embedded PostgreSQL Database on Your VMware Cloud Director Appliance.

Additional Information

Database size growth is often attributed to audit events history. For additional information see Optimize Cloud Director Performance by reducing the size of the audit_trail table.
