Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • Attempting to copy a VM from one vApp to another in Cloud Director.
  • The Copy Virtual Machine operation fails with an error of the form:
com.vmware.vcloud.api.rest.toolkit.exceptions.InvalidStateRestApiException: AddressOnParent=0 for rasd item with InstandID=<ID> is alredy allocated for bus with InstanceID=<ID> and Address=0
  • The VM being copied has both an NVME drive and a SATA drive.

Cause

This issue occurs in Cloud Director when the SATA and NVME controllers do not have a unique bus number, and are not reported correctly in the UI.

Resolution

This is a known issue affective VMware Cloud Director 10.4.x and 10.5.x releases.

This issue will be resolved in the next major release of VMware Cloud Director.

Workaround:

To workaround the issue reconfigure the controllers on the VM to have unique bus numbers.

Additional Information

Impact/Risks:
WARNING: take care when changing the controller and disk configuration of VMs to avoid data loss. Backup the VM before making any changes to ensure a rollback is available.
