Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

  • Connectivity to virtual machines located behind an VMware NSX for vSphere 6.x Edge Services Gateway (ESG) fails
  • Running the show interface command for the vNIC interfaces on the NSX Edge reports entries similar to:

    2: vNic_0: <NO-CARRIER,BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP> mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast state DOWN qlen 1000
    link/ether X:X:X:X:X:X brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
    inet x.x.x.x/24 scope global vNic_0
    5: vNic_1: <NO-CARRIER,BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP> mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast state DOWN qlen 1000



Environment

VMware NSX for vSphere 6.4.x
VMware NSX for vSphere 6.1.x
VMware NSX for vSphere 6.3.x
VMware NSX for vSphere 6.2.x

Cause

The line protocol down on an Edge vNIC interface indicates that the interface is disconnected from the back-end layer-2 switch. This issue is known to occur when the Edge VM is deployed before host preparation completes or the switch completes initialization.
