Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

Attempting to snapshot a VM with more then 255 GB of memory you will see the following types of errors:

  • Insufficient disk space on datastore.
  • An error occurred while taking a snapshot: 28 (No space left on device).
  • An error occurred while saving snapshot file.
  • Failed to create checkpoint file for the VM

Environment

VMware vSAN 7.0

VMware vSAN 8.0

Cause

vSAN is an object based storage solution, When storing a file it must be put in to a directory and the default namespace capacity is limited to 255 GB.

Due to this VM memory snapshots are limited to VMs with 255 GB or memory.

Resolution

If the VM is configured with more then 255 GB of memory, please take snapshot without memory.
