Vmk selection for NSXT Transport Node Installation

Issue/Introduction

This article provides information on choosing a specific vmk to use for TN install.

Symptoms:
When there are multiple management vmks, there is no guarantee which VMK will be used during the Transport Node installation.

Environment

VMware NSX-T Data Center
VMware NSX-T Data Center 2.5.x

Cause

This issue occurs as NSX inventory management collect a list of the host IPs which are marked for management. NSX uses the first one on the list to communicate with the host during the TN install. Unfortunately, the IP inventory list does not have a guaranteed order which means any IP with a management tag could be the first on the list. All IPs with management tag has to be reachable by the NSX Manager.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, choose a particular VMK to be use by the NSX Manager. Ensure it is the only VMK with a management tag during NSX installation.
