Issue/Introduction

This article provides information about unsupported ioctl warnings in a host vmkernel.log file and outlines any impact.

Symptoms:
  • The vmkernel.log file on an ESXi host contains one of these or similar entries:
Unsupported ioctl 58
Unsupported ioctl 43
Unsupported ioctl 59
Unsupported ioctl 60

For vSphere 6.0:

Unsupported ioctl 61
Unsupported ioctl 62

For vSphere 6.5 and 6.7:

Unsupported ioctl 62
Unsupported ioctl 63

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 5.1
VMware ESXi 6.7.x
VMware vSphere ESXi 6.0
VMware vSphere ESXi 6.7
VMware ESXi 6.0.x
VMware vSphere ESXi 5.5
VMware vSphere ESXi 6.5
VMware ESXi 6.5.x

Cause

This issue occurs when certain vSCSI filters query virtual disks. Some types of disks (for example, snapshots) do not support ioctl requests and a warning appears in the vmkernel.log file.

Resolution

These warning messages are harmless and can be safely ignored.
