Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
When scheduling VM compatibility upgrade, if the "Only upgrade after normal guest OS shutdown" check box is select, the VM cannot be upgraded through soft reboot.

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 6.7.x
VMware vSphere ESXi 6.7

Resolution

To resolve this issue, use one of these options:
  • To init a guest, shutdown either inside guest OS or through menu in VM power ops.
Right-click the Virtual Machine and select Power > Shut Down Guest OS.

The virtual machine will be upgraded to target hardware version as expected.

  • Deselect (uncheck) the "Only upgrade after normal guest OS shutdown" check box and perform guest OS reboot. The virtual machine will then be upgraded to expected hardware version after guest reboot.
