Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
When the HP LeftHand Device Specific Modules (DSM) for MPIO is installed on a Microsoft Windows machine (physical machine or virtual guest) that is presented ESX volumes, the vmkernel.log contains messages similar to:
  • vmkernel: 17:01:30:38.273 cpu6:4102)NMP: nmp_CompleteCommandForPath: Command 0x2a (0x41027fa06e40) to NMP device "naa.6000eb3b1371b311000000000000004f" failed on physical path "vmhba32:C1:T2:L0" H:0x0 D:0x2 P:0x0 Valid sense data: 0x3 0x0 0x0.

    The codes translate to:

    Host = H:0x0 = OK
    Device = D:0x2 = CHECK CONDITION
    Sense Key = 0x3 = MEDIUM ERROR
    Additional Sense Code/ASC Qualifier = 0x0/0x0 = NO ADDITIONAL SENSE DATA

  • vmkernel: 17:01:30:39.387 cpu6:4102)ScsiDeviceIO: 1672: Command 0x2a to device "naa.6000eb3b1371b311000000000000004f" failed H:0x0 D:0x2 P:0x0 Valid sense data: 0x9 0x4 0x2

    The codes translate to:

    Host = H:0x0 = OK
    Device = D:0x2 = CHECK CONDITION
    Sense Key = 0x9 = VENDOR SPECIFIC
    Additional Sense Code/ASC Qualifier = 0x4/0x2 = LOGICAL UNIT NOT READY - INITIALIZATION COMMAND REQUIRED

Resolution

If the HP LeftHand DSM for MPIO is installed on a Windows machine (physical machine or virtual guest) that is presented with the same LUNs as the ESX host, LUN accessibility issues for ESX hosts may arise. This issue occurs due to the unique LUN locking ability of the DSM for MPIO.

The storage stack for ESX host uses the SCSI-2 Reserve/Release commands or the Atomic Test & Set (ATS) capability of VAAI to lock a LUN, neither of which works with the HP Lefthand DSM for MPIO.

HP recommends against installing the HP LeftHand DSM for MPIO on any host that has visibility to ESX LUNs. For more information, see Running VMware vSphere 4 on HP LeftHand P4000 SAN Solutions.

Additional Information

The SCSI Code H:0x0 D:0x2 P:0x0 Valid sense data: 0x3 0x0 0x0 may also indicate a physical issue on the storage. Check the array for I/O errors. For more information, contact your storage vendor.
