Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • Backing up a virtual machine using Virtual Disk Development Kit (VDDK) 6.0 fails while attempting to open a disk on the Windows Proxy
  • The backup proxy has IPv6 enabled on one or more network interfaces used for the backup.

Environment

Virtual Disk Development Kit 6.0

Cause

This issue occurs due to a stack buffer overrun in the libcurl.dll DLL file while trying to enumerate DNS servers having multiple network interfaces with IPv6 enabled on the backup proxy

Resolution

This is a known issue affecting VDDK 6.0.x.

This issue is resolved in VDDK 6.5, available at VMware Downloads.

To work around this issue if you do not want to upgrade, disable IPv6 on the network interfaces of the backup proxy.

Note: By default, IPv6 is enabled in all versions of Microsoft Windows 8 and Server 2012.
