Symptoms:
The vmkernel.log file (located at /var/log in ESXi 5.x and /var/log/messages in ESXi 4.x) contains entries similar to:

Cause

This warning message can occur if the virtual machine name combined with the port ID exceed 32 characters. For example:

Name: vm-testdevenv-02.abc.test.com.eth1
Port ID: 0x300000c

In this example, the combined length is 43 characters, which exceeds the 32 character limit. The warning message indicates that part of the name is truncated. It can occur if you are using any VMXNET series of virtual adapter, including VMXNET3.

Resolution

This warning message is harmless and can be safely ignored.
