Issue/Introduction

The purpose of this KB is to provide a workaround/resolution for the vRNI 6.5.1 upgrade issue

Symptoms:
Issues are seen while upgrading to the vRealize Network Insight version to 6.5.1, upgrades get stuck and do not progress further.
Below symptoms are observed for both issues.

 Issue 1:
  • Upgrade will fail while upgrading infra-base service
  • Platform: The infra-base upgrade fails with the following error in /var/log/arkin/centralized_upgrade.log
Error executing action `upgrade` on resource 'apt_package[libglib2.0-0:amd64]'

Proxy: The infra base upgrade stuck with the above error on /var/log/chef-run.log
apt_package[libglib2.0-0:amd64] action upgrade[2022-02-08T07:47:40+00:00] INFO: Processing apt_package[libglib2.0-0:amd64] action upgrade (base::base line 19)

 Issue 2:
  • UI is stuck at some step.
  • At least 1 platform was initially on 3.x or 4.x (Identify with "sudo cat /home/ubuntu/build-target/deployment/patch.txt")
  • In /var/log/arkin/chef-run.log
     Processing triggers for initramfs-tools (0.130ubuntu3.13) ...
      update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-5.4.0-90-generic
xz: (stdout): Write error: No space left on device

  • Running command "sudo df -h /dev/sda1" shows:
              /dev/sda1 180M 97M 71M 58% /boot

Environment

VMware vRealize Network Insight 6.3.x
VMware vRealize Network Insight 6.5.0
VMware vRealize Network Insight 6.4.0

Cause

Issue 1:

The root cause of the issue is the package discrepancy introduced for the
“libglib” set of packages in one of the earlier releases.

Issue 2:

vRNI VMs that are not rebooted after a kernel upgrade causes more than two kernels during upgrade in the boot and caused a space crunch.

Resolution

To resolve the above-mentioned issues new bits for vRNI 6.5.1 are made available to download from the VMware customer connect portal.

vRealize Network Insight  6.5.1 Build number 1643667509 will no longer be available for download.

To resolve the above 2 upgrade-related issues, VMware recommends customers upgrade to vRealize Network Insight 6.5.1 Build number 1645037705.
