Issue/Introduction

Summary

Static Nimble iSCSI target entries on ESXi hosts reattached after SRM Test / Cleanup

Example
Site Recovery Manager
All iscsi targets required to be unmounted and detached successfully during cleanup workflow.  You will see similar entries in vmware-dr.log confirming SRM is functioning as required...unmounting and detaching.

  • srm detaching iscsi::  DetachScsiLuns: Detaching x SCSI LUNs from x hosts
  • In hostd, it was shown as "permanently removed":
  • The iSCSI target iqn....nimblestorage...was permanently removed from vmhbaxx

Host side

  • Found detachScsiLunEx in hostd completed.
  • On the hosts/storage adapters/paths, you will  see specific Nimble iSCSI targets "iqn....nimblestorage..." still attached that were detached during the SRM cleanup.

Impact

Accumulation of attached iscsi targets above what is required.
Slow reboots due to storage scans of multiple storage target scans

Environment

VMware ESXi 4.1.x Embedded
VMware vSphere ESXi 5.0
VMware vCenter Server 5.0.x
VMware ESXi 4.1.x Installable
VMware vSphere ESXi 5.1
VMware vCenter Server 4.1.x

Resolution

The following solutions correspond to each reason (returned with a specific reason code).

  • This is a Nimble OS configuration issue.  Contact Nimble Support.
Nimble support reports that certain Nimble OS builds have a default setting for "volume-scope-target" which does not go back and cleanup detached scsi targets.  The other option is group-scope-target. This option has a built in mechanism to cleanup detached iscsi targets.
