VM shows black screen after Mac OS X Upgrade

Issue/Introduction

This resource provides steps on how to resolve the black screen issue seen on the VM (when launched in Fusion) that occurs after upgrading to the latest Mac OS X.

Symptoms:
After upgrading to the latest Mac OS X, the Virtual Machine will show a black screen when you launch it in Fusion. However,  the virtual machine desktop preview can still be viewed in the library window.

Environment

VMware Fusion 11.x

Cause

The Mac OS X introduces a new update for Mac devices where users get to choose what application needs to have access to the contents of your screen. This update blocks Fusion application from displaying the Virtual Machine content on the Mac Display.

Resolution

To troubleshoot this issue, follow the below steps :

Note: If the virtual machine is currently running and you do not wish to shutdown the virtual machine (as you are not able to save anything on the currently running applications due to black screen), suspend the virtual machine and quit VMware Fusion. To do this, follow the steps below:

• Go to Fusion Menu > Virtual Machine > Suspend
• Now go to VMware Fusion > Quit VMware Fusion
• Then follow the steps mentioned below.

1. On the top left-hand side, click on the Apple Logo, then click on System Preferences.
2. Now go to Security & Privacy, click on Privacy and towards the left hand side from the list of options, click on Screen Recording.
3. Place a check mark next to Fusion application listed in the Screen Recording window.
4. Open Fusion and launch the Virtual Machine. If you do not see the Fusion application listed for Screen Recording:
   1. Shutdown / Suspend the virtual machine
   2. Quit VMware Fusion
   3. Please run the below mentioned command in the Terminal:

       tccutil reset All com.vmware.fusion 

5. Restart the Mac device.
6. Repeat Steps 1 to 4.
