Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

  • Performing a kernel dump (kdump) on Linux virtual machines with a VMware Paravirtual SCSI Controller fail with a timeout.
  • The virtual machine has multiple vCPUs.
  • The guest operating system displays an error similar to:

    Loading ata_piix.ko module
    INFO: task insmod:163 blocked for more than 120 seconds

     



Environment

VMware vCenter Server 5.0.x
VMware vSphere ESXi 5.0
VMware vCenter Server 4.0.x
VMware vCenter Server 4.1.x
VMware ESXi 4.0.x Installable
VMware ESXi 4.1.x Installable

Cause

This issue can occur when the VMware Paravirtual SCSI controller attempts to send CPU interrupts to a CPU that has been disabled by the kdump kernel.

Resolution

This is a known issue affecting ESXi 4.0, 4.1 and 5.0.
