Datastore missing after rebuilding the RAID disk/LUN

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

After a RAID rebuild following a disk failure, you may experience these symptoms:

• VMFS datastore is missing
• VMFS datastore cannot be accessed or browsed
• Virtual machines are showing as Inaccessible
• Virtual machines cannot be powered on

Resolution

When a RAID rebuild takes place, the physical ID of the LUN may change, which causes the ESX/ESXi host to detect the LUN as a snapshot.
