Issue/Introduction

This article provides steps for setting set an alarm for virtual machines hard disk usage.

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 7.x
VMware vCenter Server 8.x
VMware vSphere ESXi 7.x
VMware vSphere ESXi 8.x


Resolution

To set an alarm for virtual machines hard disk usage:

  1. Log in to the vCenter Server using the vSphere Client.
  2. Based on your monitoring needs, perform one of the following:
    • Select the vCenter Server instance to monitor all virtual machines managed by vCenter
    • Select the cluster instance to monitor virtual machines in the same cluster
    • Select the virtual machine to monitor a specific virtual machine
  3. Click Configure, then select Alarm Definitions
  4. Click Add
  5. Enter the alarm name.
  6. Select Virtual Machines as the target type, then click NEXT
    Note: the target type will be Virtual Machine by default if you select a virtual machine in step 2
  7. From the trigger drop-down menu, under Disk, select VM Total Size on Disk
  8. Click Select severity to choose  either Show as Warning or Show as Critical from the drop-down menu, click NEXT
  9. Specify the Alarm Reset Rules and click NEXT
  10. Click CREATE
