Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
The following notification is received in the Usage Meter 4.X web application after a vCenter Server is added for metering: "API Exception occurred when querying SPBM profiles."

The Usage Meter collection logs show the following error: ERROR | ter collector thread |        com.vmware.um.vcsession.VCSession | vCenter collector2295 | VCSession login for server 3 failed with class com.sun.xml.ws.client.ClientTransportException HTTP transport error: java.net.UnknownHostException: scnmvcidkbal001.cnm.lan=>scnmvcidkbal001.cnm.lan

Environment

VMware vCloud Usage Meter 4.x

Cause

This error is due to not added Profile-driven storage view role to the user account with which Usage Meter will connect to the vCenter Server, which usage data it will collect.

Resolution

Procedure

To solve this issue, do the following:
  1. In vSphere, under Administration, create a new read-only role.
  2. Assign a Profile-driven storage view permission to that role.
  3. Under Global Permissions,  assign this read-only role to the user account which will be used by Usage Meter to connect to the vCenter Server to start the collection of usage data.
