Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

  • You are preforming a VMware NSX upgrade to 4.1.2.
  • At the manager upgrade part, the upgrade fails, as one of the NSX managers fails to enter maintenance mode.
  • You see MAINTENANCE_MODE_FAILED on the NSX manager as admin when you run the following command:
>get group maintenance-mode status
  • Results:
Group Type: MANAGER
Members:
UUID Leadership Work Completed Group Update Ack Received Maintenance Mode Status
    xxxxxxxx-65d4-4762-97af-xxxxxxxxxxxx False True MAINTENANCE_MODE_FAILED
    xxxxxxxx-c644-d0ab-6369-xxxxxxxxxxxx True True MAINTENANCE_MODE_OFF
    xxxxxxxx-2fdf-4fbd-bcc0-xxxxxxxxxxxx True True MAINTENANCE_MODE_OFF

Environment

VMware NSX-T Data Center
VMware NSX-T Data Center 3.x
VMware NSX-T Data Center 4.x

Cause

Since VMware NSX 4.x, some services under MANAGER (proton) group, such as VMC_* are no longer in use, however stale leases for those deprecated services (from older versions like 3.x.x) are still present in 4.x.x since they were never deleted.
This issue was found during 4.1.2 testing and fix is present in 4.1.2 version. However, the fix is required in the "from" version during rolling-upgrade, so workaround needs to be applied in order to proceed with rolling-upgrade/maintenance mode.

Resolution

This issue is resolved in VMware NSX 4.1.2
But only as a from version, that is you are upgrading from VMware NSX 4.1.2 to higher version.
