As of VMware NSX 4.x, some services under the MANAGER (proton) group, such as VMC_* are no longer in use, however stale leases for those deprecated services (from older versions like 3.x) can still remain undeleted after upgrading to NSX 4.x. The presence of those stale leases prevent an NSX Manager appliance from entering into maintenance mode which causes an upgrade of the node to fail at that step.
This issue is resolved in VMware NSX 4.1.2 available at Broadcom Downloads.
If you are having difficulty finding and downloading software, please review the KB article Download Broadcom products and software.
Note the fix applies to upgrades done from version 4.1.2 to a higher version.
