NSX-T Unable to retrieve IP address from DHCP relay

Issue/Introduction

• Packet captures show the DHCP Discovery packet entering the VDR Port.
• VDR Port Output Stats are actively increasing during DHCP requests.
• Packet captures show the DHCP Discovery has a Hardware Address Length (i.e MAC Address) greater than 6 bytes:

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (Discover)

Message type: Boot Request (1)

Hardware type: Ethernet (0x01)

Hardware address length: 16 <<<

 

Environment

VMware NSX-T Data Center

Cause

NSX-T only supports a Hardware Address Length of 6 bytes. As a result, the DHCP Discovery packet is dropped by the VDR Port.

Resolution

There is currently no resolution to this issue.

Workaround:
Ensure the hardware address of the DHCP relay server has 6 bytes.
