Issue/Introduction

When redeploying vCenter Server and/or reinstalling vSphere Replication Server to vCenter Server, it fails to load the respective plug-ins on the WebClient.

Symptoms:
After successfully registering the vSphere Replication server to vCenter Server, you experience these symptoms:
  • You are unable to see the plug-in on the WebClient plug-in.
  • Package gets downloaded:
    [INFO ] session-init-pool-14283 70007003 100047 200013 com.vmware.vise.vim.commons.i18n.CatalogManager Finished downloading /var/lib/vmware/vsphere-client/catalog//VirtualCenter/5.5.0/en/com.vmware.vcHms/extension_f22bcce18aa12b62e8d8f98ecafe18a9.vmsg from https://vcenter_sever:443

  • You are unable to install the package:

    [ERROR] vc-service-pool-14 70000032 100003 200001 com.vmware.vise.vim.extension.VcExtensionManager Package com.vmware.vcHms was not installed!

Environment

VMware vSphere Replication 5.5.x
VMware vSphere Replication 6.0.x
VMware vSphere Replication 5.8.x

Resolution

To re-register vSphere Replication Appliance to vCenter Server:

Note: Validate these before re-registering the service:
  • NTP (System Time synchronization)
  • DNS records and shortnames
  • Also, ensure you populate the VC/Lookup service address along with the FQDN on the VR server's /etc/hosts.
  1. Stop the vSphere Web Client services on vCenter Server.
  2. Remove all the references to the vcHMS plug-ins and the relevant packages.
  3. If its vCenter Server for Windows, navigate to C:\ProgramData\VMware\vCenterServer\cfg\vsphere-client\vc-packages\vsphere-client-serenity\ for 6.x or C:\ProgramData\VMware\vSphere Web Client\vc-packages\vsphere-client-serenity for 5.x and remove all com.vmware.vcHms XXXX folders and their contents.

If you are using vCenter Server Appliance, run these commands:

    rm -rf /usr/lib/vmware-vpx/extensions/com.vmware.vcHms*
  4. Start the vSphere Web Client services on vCenter Server.
  5. Restart the VR server and re-register vSphere Replication Appliance to vCenter Server.

For more information, see the Register the vSphere Replication Appliance with vCenter Single Sign-On section in the VMware vSphere Replication Administration Guide.

Additional Information

Impact/Risks:
We may temporarily need to stop the WebClient services until the plug-in instances are removed and reloaded. If needed you may take a snapshot of vCenter Server or the machine where the WebClient installed.
