Installing vCenter Server fails with error: "The DB user entered does not have the required permissions..."

Issue/Introduction

• Installing VMware vCenter Server fails.
• Cannot install vCenter Server.
• After entering the database password when prompted you see the error:
  
  The DB user entered does not have the required permissions needed to install and configure vCenter Server with the selected DB. Correct the following error(s):
  The database user 'username' does not have the following privileges on the 'databasename'
  
  EXECUTE sp_add_category
  EXECUTE sp_add_job
  EXECUTE sp_add_jobschedule
  EXECUTE sp_add_jobserver
  EXECUTE sp_add_jobstep
  EXECUTE sp_delete_job
  EXECUTE sp_update_job
  SELECT syscategories
  SELECT sysjobs
  SELECT sysjobsteps

Environment

• VMware vCenter Server 5.5.x
• VMware vCenter Server 5.0.x
• VMware vCenter Server 5.1.x

Cause

This issue occurs due to lack of privileges on the SQL server.

 

When installing vCenter Server, you need to connect to the SQL server with a user that has dbo permissions on the primary database which records all the system-level information to create the necessary rollup jobs for vCenter Server.

Resolution

Create a new user that is assigned the db_owner role for the system level database (selected in below image) on the SQL server that contains the vCenter Server database.
