HCX - Bulk Migration may fail using OpenSource VM tools

Issue/Introduction

This resource is to inform about OpenSource VM tools usage with respect to HCX vSR Bulk migration.


HCX vSR Bulk migration may fail in the absence of VMware tools on a Linux OS (RedHat, CentOS, Ubuntu etc) installed virtual machine.
Also, IP customization using Bulk Migration will not work.

Resolution

• Uninstall OpenSource VM tools on Source VM before initiating Bulk migration.
• Install VMware tools on Source VM before initiating Bulk migration.
• Refer LINK to install VMware tools on (RHEL or CENTOS).

Workaround:
User may be able to continue using OpenSource VM tools during HCX Bulk Migration with following guidelines:

• "Force PowerOff" option MUST be selected from migration wizard during initiation of vSR Bulk migration as shown below:

• IP customization functionality won't be serviced. Hence the suggestion is to manually change the IP details on the cloud/target side post successful migration and instantiation of the workload VM.

Additional Information

Impact/Risks:

• This will ONLY impact HCX vSR Bulk Migration and its subsequent workflows including IP customization.
• There will be NO impact to RAV, vMotion and COLD migration.
• Network Extension services will remain operational.
