Issue/Introduction

The maximum time limit on snapshot consolidation can be increased to allow the virtual machine to be stunned for an extended period of time. For example, Increasing the consolidation time to resolve an issue when the asynchronous consolidation fails after 10 iterations.

By default, the snapshot consolidation time is set to 6 seconds.

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi

Resolution

To increase the time limit on snapshot consolidation, change the snapshot.maxConsolidateTime configuration parameter in the virtual machine to a higher value, such as 30 seconds:

Note: VMware recommends to set this to an optimum value of 30 seconds as this is usually sufficient to complete the required operations.
 
  1. Shut down the virtual machine.
  2. Right-click the virtual machine and click Edit Settings.
  3. On vCenter Server 7.x : 
    1. Click the VM Options tab.
    2. Under Advanced, click Configuration Parameters and add snapshot.maxConsolidateTime = 30.

  4. On vCenter Server 8.x :
    1. Click the Advanced Parameters.
    2. Add attribute : snapshot.maxConsolidateTime and value : 30
