Backing up NSX Manager data fails in JP locale

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

  • NSX Manager backup fails.
  • You see the error:

    File upload action aborted due to insufficient storage or invalid file name.( 550 The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect. )
     
  • NSX Manager Locale configuration is set to JP (ja-JP). To see current locale settings, log in to the NSX Manager virtual appliance and navigate to Manage Appliance Settings > Locale.
  • An error is logged in FTP server side logs with filename containing special character ? as short name of the day.

Environment

VMware NSX for vSphere 6.2.x
VMware NSX for vSphere 6.3.x

Cause

This issue occurs because some FTP servers do not accept backup filename with specific multi bytes characters.

Resolution

This issue is resolved in VMware NSX for vSphere 6.4.0

Workaround:

To work around this issue if you do not want to upgrade, set the locale to en-US.
