Issue/Introduction

This article provides information the limitation of connecting VMK adapter to an NSX-T logical switch.

Symptoms:
When Switch Security and IP Discovery is enabled on the VMkernel NIC, you experience these symptoms:

• Live upgrade of the ESXi host fails.
• The ESXi host experience a bad state which potentially results in loss of network traffic.

Environment

VMware NSX-T Data Center
VMware NSX-T Data Center 2.x

Cause

This issue occurs because when the Switch Security and IP Discovery is enabled on the VMkernel NIC, a live upgrade of the ESXi host fails as the upgrade script/module skips the VMkernel NIC as they were not expected to be a part of the upgrade while performing backup/cleanup of the switch ports which results in the ESXi host experiencing a bad state.

Resolution

This is a known issue affecting VMware NSX-T Data Center 2.3.x.

Currently, there is no resolution or workaround.
