Issue/Introduction

Purpose
This article provides information about the Panzura Freedom Filer VSA v7.1.9.3.

Disclaimer:  The partner solution referenced in this article is a solution that is developed and supported by a partner. Use of this product is also governed by the end user license agreement of the partner. You must obtain from the partner the application, support, and licensing for using this product. For more information, see https://panzura.com/support/.

The VMware Ready for vSAN File Services certification only verifies the partner solution’s ability to serve SMB and NFS shares using the vSAN datastore.  To ensure optimal performance and functionality, VMware does not support hosting VMDK files via a vSAN file services solution.  Refer to the vSAN documentation for more details on how to use the vSAN datastore.

Resolution
The Panzura Freedom Filer VSA (vSphere Storage Appliance) is an ideal solution to bring high performance enterprise file services to VMware vSAN hyper-converged clusters, leveraging public or private cloud object storage as the source of truth for the data, while utilizing vSAN storage for local high performance.  With it’s global CloudFS filesystem, Panzura excels at multi-site collaboration. With the object store backend, Panzura enables efficient and performant hybrid cloud strategies.

Use cases

Typical use cases for the Panzura Freedom Filer VSA are:
  • Home directories and departmental storage
  • Collaborative applications such as Revit
  • Archive and backup storage
  • Multi-site collaborative NAS applications
  • Unstructured data storage
  • Hybrid cloud data storage and migration

Solution Architecture

A Panzura Freedom Filer can be deployed as a single-node VSA or as a two-node VSA high-availability cluster.  Each VSA consumes raw capacity as vmdks provided by the underlying VMware vSAN cluster as well as object storage provided by a public or private cloud vendor.  The vSAN vmdks are then pooled to provide metadata storage and caching capacity for the Panzura CloudFS file system that can then be shared via NFS and/or SMB.

Figure 1: Panzura Freedom filer global cloud filesystem (CloudFS) mesh architecture spanning three (3) locations: Los Angeles, London, Singapore.

A two VSA high-availability cluster within each location provides automated failover and failback of file services in case of software and hardware failures.

As a software only solution, Panzura Freedom Filer VSA can be deployed on any VMware vSAN cluster.  The performance of the solution will inherently scale with the performance of the underlying hardware and vSAN cluster.

To simplify deployments, Panzura VSAs can be deployed using an OVF. The amount of raw capacity that can be managed by a Panzura VSA scales from single digit Terabytes up to multiple Petabytes.

Solution Components

The Panzura VSA can be deployed on any VMware vSAN hyper-converged infrastructure, independent of the underlying hardware (as long as that hardware is supported by VMware).  The solution is supported on vSAN 6.5, vSAN 6.6 and vSAN 6.7.
