Issue/Introduction

When re-extending a network in VMware HCX (for example, adjusting the gateway or prefix length), the network extension removal (un-extension) may succeed, but attempting to re-extend it can fail. In these situations, the HCX interface shows the network briefly in an “Extending” state before switching to “Tearing Down.” This typically happens after changing the gateway on an already extended network. This issue can disrupt the network extension process, leading to potential connectivity or service interruptions.

Environment

VMware HCX

VMC on AWS

Cause

The network extension frequently transitions from “Extending” to “Tearing Down” because stale or “unscratched” segments remain in the VMware Cloud on AWS (VMC) environment. Even after un-extending (removing) the network extension through HCX, the corresponding network segment can persist in the VMC UI.

Resolution

Delete the Existing (Stale) Network Segment in VMC

Log in to the VMC console, locate the network segment corresponding to the un-extended network, and remove it.

Re-extend the Network with the New Gateway

After removing the stale network segment in VMC, proceed with extending the network in HCX using the updated gateway or prefix length.

Ensure that no residual network object remains in VMC before attempting the extension again.
