Upgrading vCenter Server 6.x clears local OS permission

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • Local OS permission configured in vCenter Server 6.x is missing after upgrading vCenter Server 6.7 or 7.0.
  • Global permission remains after upgrading vCenter Server 6.x


Environment

VMware vCenter Server Appliance 6.5.x
VMware vCenter Server 7.0.x
VMware vCenter Server 6.7.x
VMware vCenter Server 6.5.x

Cause

Local OS users and user groups permissions should not be migrated into 6.x/7.x. While migrating vpxd permissions during upgrade any data for local OS users and user groups are deleted.

Resolution

VMware vCenter Server 6.5 and greater is designed to work this way.

Workaround:
To workaround this issue, after vCenter Server upgrade to 6.5 or greater assign permissions for all local users and user groups.
