"java.io.FileNotFoundException: /opt/vmware/vcloud-director/logs/dbextract-tool.log (Permission denied)" error when using cell-management-tool

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

• "Permission denied" error is observed when running the cell-management-tool.
  • /opt/vmware/vcloud-director/logs/dbextract-tool.log (Permission denied)
  • /opt/vmware/vcloud-director/logs/cell-management-tool (Permission denied)
• "call failed" error is observed when running the cell-management-tool

Environment

VMware Cloud Director for Service Provider 10.x

Cause

This issue can occur if the permissions, owner, or both were modified on the following files:

/opt/vmware/vcloud-director/logs/cell-management-tool.log
/opt/vmware/vcloud-director/logs/dbextract-tool.log

The cell-management-tool runs using the vcloud user and this user must have access to the log files for commands to complete.  

Resolution

To resolve this issue, correct the ownership of the relevant file on the Cloud Director Cell.

If the error contains "cell-management-tool (Permission denied)"

1. Open an SSH session to the first Cloud Director Cell in the environment.
2. Run the following to check the permission on the file

ls -lhtr /opt/vmware/vcloud-director/logs/cell-management-tool.log

3. Please run the following to change the read-only permission on the file:

chmod 750 /opt/vmware/vcloud-director/logs/cell-management-tool.log

If the error contains "dbextract-tool.log (Permission denied)":

1. Open an SSH session to the first Cloud Director Cell in the environment.
2. Run the following to check the permission on the file

ls -lhtr /opt/vmware/vcloud-director/logs/dbextract-tool.log

3. Please run the following to change the read-only permission on the file:

chmod 750 /opt/vmware/vcloud-director/logs/dbextract-tool.log
