Issue/Introduction

This article provides steps to roll back a migration of vCenter Server.

Note: The rollback procedure restores your environment to the state before running the migration.

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 6.7.x

VMware vCenter Server Appliance 6.7.x

VMware vCenter Server Appliance 7.x

VMware vCenter Server Appliance 8.x

Resolution

Note: Before preforming the preceding steps, create a log bundle of the failed system for troubleshooting purposes.
For more information, see Collecting diagnostic information for VMware vCenter Server 7.x and 8.x.

Prerequisites for all rollback scenarios

  • Backup of the vCenter Server, platform services controller and single sign-on instances.
  • Backup of the vCenter Server database.
  • File based backup of the vCenter Server appliance 6.7/7.x/8.x
  • Powered off snapshots of the vCenter Server appliance.

Roll back an upgrade of vCenter Server 6.7 with embedded Platform Services Controller to 7.x/8.x.

This procedure applies to a vCenter Server 6.7 with an embedded Single Sign-On or Platform Services Controller server that was upgraded to a vCenter Server Appliance 7.x/8.x with an embedded Platform Service Controller.

  1. Power off the newly deployed vCenter Server Appliance.
  2. Bring the old vCenter Server instance online:
    1. If the old vCenter Server instance is powered off, power on the instance.
    2. If the old vCenter Server instance is powered on, restart the instance.
  3. If the vCenter Single Sign-On server was joined to an Active Directory domain, it may need to be joined again.
  4. Wait for all vCenter Server services to start and log in to the vSphere Web Client to verify the vSphere inventory.

Roll back an upgrade of vCenter Server 6.7 with an external vCenter Single Sign-On or Platform Services Controller instance to 7.x/8.x.

This procedure applies to environments that were upgraded from vCenter Server 6.7 with an external Single Sign-On or Platform Services Controller server to a vCenter Server Appliance 7.x/8.x with an embedded Platform Service Controller.

vCenter Server 6.7 will need to be converged before the upgrade. See, Changing external Platform Services Controller deployment to embedded during process of migration or upgrade

  1. Power off the newly deployed vCenter Server Appliance.
  2. Bring the old vCenter Server instance online:
    1. If the old vCenter Server instance is powered off, power on the instance.
    2. If the old vCenter Server instance is powered on, restart the instance.
  3. Wait for all vCenter Server services to start and log in to the vSphere Web Client to verify the vSphere inventory.

Roll back an upgrade of vCenter Server 7.x to vCenter Server 8.x

This procedure applies to environments that were upgraded from vCenter Server 7.0 to vCenter Server 8.0 with an embedded Platform Service Controller.

If the above rollback procedures fail, revert to the powered off snapshot that was taken prior to the upgrade or restore from backup.
