Issue/Introduction

ESXi VGPU utilization reflects "0"

  1. In the vSphere Client, navigate to the host.
  2. Click the Monitor tab and click Performance.
  3. Click Advanced and select GPU from the drop-down menu.

Resolution

Starting with vSphere 7.0 Update 1, Xorg is no longer needed for graphics devices operating in vGPU mode. Consequently, Xorg might not automatically start when using vGPUs. This change won't affect the process of assigning vGPU profiles to virtual machines.

If you're using an NVIDIA GPU with MIG (Multi-Instance GPU) enabled, skip to step 3.

  1. Re-Install NVIDIA GPU VIB
  2. Installing and configuring the NVIDIA VIB on ESXi - Installing and configuring the NVIDIA VIB on ESXi (367541)
  3. NVIDIA GPU is in MIG-mode that the NVIDIA Management Library does not expose the same metrics/insights when used with vSphere as opposite to GPU is in time-slicing mode.
  4. There is a known bug in nvidia-smi that prevents it from showing detailed metrics from within VMs with this option (MIG) on.

Workaround-

  1. Take an SSH session to ESXi Host and login with root credentials
  2. Run the command to check utilization stats- nvidia-smi dmon <options>

For further troubleshooting or resolution regarding this issue, please contact the GPU vendor directly. This limitation is not a result of VMware's implementation, so they will be best equipped to provide assistance and potential workarounds.
